Autopictography
To draw naturally, you need to let yourself go. Precisely, that is where the problem lies. Letting oneself go is far from easy and we become confronted with many hurdles, both psychological and cultural. “It doesn’t look good”, “it’s not what I meant to draw”, “that isn’t how you do it”, “it isn’t art” etc. Confronted with these obstacles which act as mini negative neurosis, Serge Goldwicht, step by step, supports the artist in all of his/her doubts and expressive desires. Subsequent to a workshop, people are always pleasantly surprised and profoundly relaxed.
The name of this method is based on a neologism initially taken from the Greek term “graphein”, which means both to write and to draw. As for the term pictography, the “Robert” dictionary defines this as a figurative representation of drawings which is not communicated by spoken language. Overall, autopictography can be understood as a language which is unique to ourselves and of which we possess the power to transcribe in drawn signs. Autopictography, as a practical method, fills a hole for all of those individuals seeking to write down their unconscious, spontaneous, natural drawing.
The basis of the method:
-Active support of the contributor within a group.
The contributor is the “supporter”.
- The unrestricting nature of aims underpinned by the duty to go “one step further”
The two signposts:
Non-judgment on an aesthetic level.
Non interpretation on a psychological level.
Stakes and objectives
Stakes:
-Letting go of the image that one wishes to give of oneself.
-The real, tangible and communicable exercise of one’s creativity.
Personal objectives:
Self-affirmation and going beyond limitations.
Gaining self-confidence.
Catharsis of internal tension and relaxation.
Development of intuition and creativity.
Gaining the foundations of drawing aesthetics.
Objectives within a group.
- Increased awareness by the working group of its strength in a cross-cultural and cross-generational perspective.
- Increased confidence within the group.
